CORRECTLY DISPOSE OF CFL BULBS
CFL bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, so it’s important to dispose of them properly
BROKEN BULB
- Do not vacuum the broken bulb!
- Have people and pets leave the room and air it out for 5-10 minutes
- Shut off central air/air-conditioning
- Gather materials to clean up: cardboard/stiff paper, sticky tape, damp paper towel, glass jar with lid or sealable plastic bag
Scoop up large fragments with stiff paper and small pieces with tape. Place remnants in glass jar or bag. Dispose of in your household trash or local recycling center.
BURNT OUT BULB
The best way to dispose of used compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs is to recycle them. Avoid throwing the bulbs in the trash. Eau Claire County does not recycle CFL bulbs, but Eau Claire Energy Cooperative will gladly recycle them for you! Put the light bulb in a sealed bag and drop it off in our office. We’ll take care of the rest. Please note that ECEC cannot recycle larger "tube style" fluorescent lights.
